Welcome from our new EHC President - Tim Bryant:
Another season is upon us and those of you who play regularly each week during the season will be concerned that your fitness has dropped off (or maybe if you didn’t peak last season you are hoping to do so this)!
Those of us involved in the ‘nitty gritty’ of getting things organised are dusting ourselves down ahead of another season, but all of us will be hoping that we can in some way exceed last season’s undoubted success.
Whilst our Mens’ and Ladies’ 1st XI’s had a very successful season, a club is only as good as all the teams as a whole and it is my hope that we can provide the resources and support to all the teams below the top level and, as a committee, we are resolved to do this.
One plea from an ‘old codger’ is that we all take a more serious approach to both our discipline and behaviour, which is also relevant to spectators and all club members. Our Men’s 1st XI had a fantastic achievement last season, but as one parent of a 1st XI player said to me “it was amazing, given that often when I was watching we only had 9 players on the pitch”.
We won’t be allowed that sort of margin in the new league and nor should we be. The Club’s management had to deal with the fall-out from ill-discipline as a result of complaints to Leagues, County and Regional organisations far too often. Please let’s all address this so that we can restore our reputation and make everyone’s lives a little easier – we are all volunteers after all, as are the umpires by the way!
I hope everyone has a most enjoyable season and good luck to everyone at every level.

Eastbourne Hockey Club men's first team are going up!

They left it to the final day and it was in doubt until the final minutes of the match, but the local aces made their move on Saturday and earned an historic promotion to the top tier of Southern English hockey. They sneaked into the top two of South Premier division two on goal difference when rivals Oxford Hawks slipped to a 4-3 defeat at Barnes. That match had already finished before Eastbourne took to the field at Lewes.
Manager David Adelston said, "I didn't want to know the score, but it was available to us at the start of the game. Coach Steve Paxton knew Oxford had lost and a coupleof others did aswell I think. I didn't want to know because I thought there would be less pressure." That approach seemed to work, at least in the easrly stages. The visitors struck through Ali Barnes and Mike Cosma, but Lewes battled back and there were just two minutes on the clock when the hosts struck the equaliser. Adelston added, "After that everyone knew what the score was and they kept the ball at the far end of the pitch, It was great. Playing in South Premier two was the highest we'ed ever been; now we're playing even higher, one away from the National League." |
